As a guest you have more freedom here than anywhere else in the weekend. The palette restrictions that govern the wedding ceremony are relaxed at the sangeet, and the one rule everybody agrees on is that you do not out-dress the bride. So before you commit to anything, ask what she is wearing. It takes one message, and it is the difference between a great photograph and an awkward one.
Two shades still deserve a moment's thought, even on the dance night. Red belongs to the bride at most Hindu weddings, so it is the first thing to check; if she is not in red, it is among the strongest shades in a low-lit room. White is the harder call, because in many North Indian families the mourning association attaches to the shade itself rather than to any one function, which makes it a call-home risk at any point in the weekend. What the bride's sister should wear to a sangeet
The sister of the bride is usually in the routine, often front and center, and frequently changes between the performance and the rest of the evening. Two things matter more than anything else.
Secured drape or no drape. A traditional saree that needs a pin check between songs is the wrong choice for someone who is actually performing. A pre-draped saree, a pant saree or a skirt set removes the problem.
Distinct from the bride, coordinated with the family. Ask what the bride is wearing and go a clear step away. If she is in red, the sisters look best in emerald, midnight blue or antique silver. If she is in pastel, go saturated.

Sangeet venues are lit low and warm, then flooded by phone flash. Deep saturated shades survive both: emerald, bottle green, midnight blue, fuchsia, crimson, aubergine.
